I was talking to my cooperating kindergarten teacher yesterday, and she was emphasizing just how much her students have learned this school year. "When I got them in September, some of them didn't even know if they were a boy or a girl!" Clearly, this is the most important thing we can teach in kindergarten. Ugh.

  1. The more I learn about this, the more I think that we should allow children more say in their identity. At that age, I'd be more worried that they can recognize colors, and shapes, and recite the alphabet.

  2. Or, some of them DID know whether they were a boy or a girl--but their gender identity just didn't match up with how they were assigned at birth.
